A free trial on a course platform is a short clock that starts when you enter a card. Of the nine large platforms on this page, five advertise one in October 2026, and the stated trials run from 7 days to a month. The other four sell a free tier, a refund window or nothing at all instead. Every price and term below was read on the platform's own pricing page on 19 October 2026.
The short answer
- Five platforms advertise a free trial: Coursera Plus (7 days, monthly plan only), Skillshare (7 days), Pluralsight (10 days), LinkedIn Learning (a free month) and Codecademy (Plus or Pro, length not stated on its pricing page).
- The card is the catch. Coursera says it takes your payment details at sign-up and charges "at the end of your 7-day free trial"; the first charge on a forgotten trial is $59 on Coursera Plus and $29 to $45 on Pluralsight.
- No trial, but a free tier: DataCamp's Basic plan opens the first chapter of every course with no end date. Udemy's Personal Plan states no trial and starts at $13 a month.
- A refund window instead: MasterClass annual plans carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee, and Coursera Plus annual ($399) has a 14-day money-back guarantee rather than a trial.
- Longest clock: LinkedIn Learning's free month is the only trial here that covers a full billing cycle.
Which online learning platforms still offer a free trial in 2026?
Coursera Plus, Skillshare, Pluralsight, LinkedIn Learning and Codecademy are the five platforms on this page that advertise a free trial on their own pricing pages in October 2026. Udemy, DataCamp, MasterClass and Brilliant do not, though DataCamp and Codecademy keep a permanent free tier, and MasterClass and Coursera's annual plan offer a refund window after you pay.
The table lists each plan's trial as the platform words it, the price that follows, and what the trial or free tier actually opens. Two platforms appear twice because their monthly and annual plans have different terms.

How long is each trial, and does it need a card?
Coursera Plus gives 7 days on its monthly plan, and Coursera's own FAQ says: "We do capture your payment information when you subscribe, but you won't be charged until the end of your 7-day free trial." That makes day 7 the charge day, so cancelling on day 5 or 6 is the safe margin. The $399 annual plan has no trial at all; its protection is a 14-day money-back guarantee after payment.
Skillshare's sign-up offer reads "Start your free 7 days of unlimited classes", and its pricing page adds: "If eligible for a free trial, cancel before the trial ends to avoid being charged." The pricing page shows the annual plan, $13.99 a month paid as a single annual payment of $167.88, so check which plan your trial converts to at checkout.
Pluralsight runs the longest stated trial among the paid tech libraries: "Try 10 days free" on every individual plan, from the $29-a-month libraries to Core Tech, listed at $45 a month (marked down from $49) or $449 a year. LinkedIn Learning offers "Start my free month", and its individual price is shown only after sign-in. Codecademy's buttons read "Try Plus for free" and "Try Pro for free" without a length on the pricing page, so the confirmation email is the place to find your charge date.
The safe rule for every trial here: note the charge day the moment you sign up, and cancel two days before it.
What does the trial unlock, and what stays locked?
Pluralsight's trial is the most specific about its limits. Its FAQ says the 10-day trial "gives you access to your learning package's full course library, Skill IQ assessments, certification prep, guided learning paths, and a selection of our hands-on practice labs", and that offline downloads and the full set of labs and sandboxes need a paid plan. For a cloud or security learner, that means the trial shows the courses but not all of the hands-on environment.
Coursera Plus's trial opens the Coursera Plus catalogue, which covers most but not all of Coursera; degrees are sold separately, as our Coursera pricing breakdown explains. Skillshare's trial opens its full library of 30K+ classes. LinkedIn Learning's free month opens its library of 26,500 courses. Codecademy's Plus and Pro trials add the paid features on top of a Basic plan that is "Always free".
Coursera Plus coursera.org
Trial on the monthly plan only, payment details taken at sign-up, charged at the end of day 7. The $399 annual plan has a 14-day money-back guarantee instead.
The only trial here that opens university and Google and IBM professional certificates, so a short course can be finished inside the 7 days.
Pluralsight pluralsight.com
Every individual plan carries the trial, including Skill IQ assessments, certification prep and a selection of labs. Full labs and offline downloads need a paid plan.
The longest stated trial on a paid tech library, and the only one that lets you measure your level (Skill IQ) before paying.
LinkedIn Learning linkedin.com/learning
"Start my free month" opens 26,500 courses and learning paths. The individual price after the trial is shown only once you sign in.
The longest trial on this page: a full month is enough to complete a learning path and add the certificate to a LinkedIn profile.
Codecademy codecademy.com
Plus is $14.99 a month billed annually or $29.99 billed monthly; Pro is $19.99 or $39.99. The trial length is not stated on the pricing page.
A permanent free Basic plan under the trial, so you can keep coding in the browser after the trial ends without paying.
Udemy udemy.com
The Personal Plan starts at $13.00 a month (last read 14 October 2026; udemy.com refused our automated read on 19 October). Single courses are bought once and kept.
The one platform here where you can skip subscriptions entirely and own a single course, which suits a learner who needs one skill, not a library.
Which platforms have no trial but a free tier or refund window instead?
DataCamp has no trial, but its free account opens "the first chapter of our courses", on every course, with no end date. Premium is $14 a month billed annually. For a data learner that free chapter is a better test than a 7-day clock, because it never runs out.
MasterClass shows no free trial on its plans page; instead, "All membership plans come with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee." Its annual plans are $120 (Standard), $180 (Plus) and $240 (Premium), so the guarantee means paying first and asking for the money back within 30 days. Coursera Plus annual works the same way with a 14-day window. Brilliant's Premium page lists $20 a month for an individual and $40 for a family plan, with no trial stated.
Udemy is the other model. Its Personal Plan subscription starts at $13 a month with no trial stated, but Udemy also sells single courses outright, so the cheapest test of Udemy is often one discounted course rather than a subscription. Udemy course search shows the current price for any single course. Udemy has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Coursera since 11 May 2026 (Coursera Form 8-K); the two still sell separate plans with separate terms.
How do I avoid being charged when the trial ends?
Cancelling before the charge day is the only reliable protection, because every trial here that takes a card converts automatically. The US Federal Trade Commission's Negative Option Rule is the federal rule on offers that become paid plans unless you cancel, and the FTC opened new rulemaking on it in March 2026; it does not replace your own reminder.
The card below is built to be kept: print it or copy it into your notes the day you start a trial. It holds the charge day for each platform and the reminder day two days earlier.

Which trial fits what I want to learn?
The right trial is the one whose clock is long enough to finish something you can keep, such as a certificate, a project or a skill score. Matched to the reader:
- If you want a certificate employers recognise, start the Coursera Plus 7-day trial on the monthly plan, because it is the only trial here that includes Google, IBM and university certificates; pick a short course you can finish inside the week.
- If you are learning cloud, security or software skills, take Pluralsight's 10 days, because Skill IQ and certification prep are inside the trial and tell you where you stand before you pay $29 to $45 a month.
- If you want the longest runway, use LinkedIn Learning's free month, because it is the only trial that covers a full billing cycle and its certificates post straight to a LinkedIn profile.
- If you are learning to code from zero, start on Codecademy's free Basic plan and add the Plus trial only when you hit a locked project, because Basic never expires.
- If you are learning data skills, skip trials and use DataCamp's free first chapters, because they have no clock; Premium is $14 a month billed annually when you are ready.
- If you are a creative learner, take Skillshare's 7 days, because a week covers two or three short project classes across 30K+ titles.
- If you only need one skill, buy a single Udemy course, because you keep it with no subscription to cancel.
For the full cost picture once a trial ends, our sibling page on the cheapest unlimited course subscriptions ranks every plan here by effective monthly price, and the best free online courses covers the platforms that never charge at all.
We read each platform's own pricing, plan and help pages on 19 October 2026, recorded the price, trial length and terms exactly as published in US dollars, and cross-checked them against the platform's FAQ wording where the two differed. Where a price sits behind a sign-in (LinkedIn Learning) we say so instead of estimating it. Udemy's pages refused our automated read on 19 October 2026, so its row carries the figure confirmed on 14 October 2026. We did not sign up for the trials on this page; the finding counts what each pricing page states. Prices change; each row shows the date it was read.

Federal data behind this page
What a programme costs, what aid exists and how subscription billing is regulated are published by federal agencies rather than by any provider, and the primary sources are below so a reader can check them directly.
- Federal Student Aid states what federal aid exists and who qualifies; most subscription course platforms are not eligible for it, which is why their trial and refund terms matter.
- CFPB paying for college documents how education financing works and where its common traps are.
- College Scorecard publishes federal cost, completion and earnings data for accredited programmes, the comparison point for any certificate sold as a degree alternative.
- FTC Negative Option Rule is the federal rule on offers that turn into paid subscriptions unless you cancel, which is how most free trials work.
- National Center for Education Statistics is the federal statistical agency most published education figures trace back to.
This page compares published prices and terms. What a plan costs you depends on the offer shown at your checkout, your country and the date you sign up.
